The entry-level to low mid-range smartphone market has always been full of competition. Vivo has been an important player in this market with its range of devices, especially the Y series. The series first debuted in 2019 with the vivo Y3. Several additions have been made over the years to meet the dynamic demand. Vivo’s latest Y series phone Y22s was launched globally on 23rd August 2022. Now available in Bangladesh. Here is our detailed description of the key features of the vivo Y22s so that you can decide whether to go for it or not.
Design and build quality
The design elements of the Vivo Y22s are reminiscent of its previous generation, the Y21s. There’s a similar brushed-back design with diffused reflections. That looks much more premium than its price class. It does a great job at removing fingerprint smudges and overall cleanliness.
Yet, the build is still plastic. The phone is surrounded by plastic with a tempered glass on the front. At this price point, a premium design choice with a plastic build isn’t surprising. And if you put a case on the device, it won’t bother you much. The dimensions of the vivo Y22s are 164.3 by 76.1 by 8.4 mm. The device weighs around 192 grams.
Moving on to the ports and buttons, the Y22s has all the essential features. The 3.5mm headphone jack still sits next to the secondary mic and bottom-firing speaker. The left side of the device houses the SIM slot along with a dedicated micro SDXC slot. The right side houses the volume rocker. And power button that doubles as the biometric sensor.
The overall design and build quality of the Y22s is satisfactory. But, the only drawback could be its front design. Which has thicker bezels and chin compared to the 2022 standard. Display
Perhaps the Y22s most visible downfall is its display. While this may seem like a stretch. For its price Vivo should have included better hardware in the display segment. It is considered to be the primary contact point between the user and the device.
The Y22s features a 6.55-inch 720P IPS LCD panel with 270 PPI density. It has a resolution of 720 by 1612 pixels. The choice of IPS LCD is still understandable. But given that Vivo has priced the device in the mid-range segment. It should have included FHD+ resolution or a faster refresh rate. Many of Vivo’s competitors offer the same with AMOLED at this price point. Speaking of the display, it doesn’t have the odd color shift or blue tint like other HD+ LCDs. Yet, that is the only good thing. Colors on the device are a bit washed out and the lack of vibrancy is even more noticeable due to the low resolution. The display is relatively bright for both indoor and outdoor use. But it’s no match for direct sunlight as you’ll notice glare even at largest brightness.
Overall, the display on the Y22s could definitely have been better. What it brings to the table is passable but it certainly won’t be the main selling point of the device.
the camera
Vivo Y22s has dual camera system. This may seem like a downgrade from the previous generation. Which had a triple-camera setup. But there is much more than meets the eye.
The main sensor on the vivo Y22s is a 50 MP (f/1.8) wide-angle shooter. It’s the same main sensor found on the Y21s. The Y21s had an extra 2MP depth and macro sensors. This year Vivo ditched the depth sensor and kept a 2 MP (f/2.4) macro shooter for the dual camera setup.
Moving on to camera performance, the main sensor steals the show here. Pictures look great in outdoor conditions with decent lighting. For a mid-range smartphone, the camera was surprisingly good. At capturing dynamic range and detail.
The portrait was a hit or a miss though. Sometimes it captures great details with accurate edge detection. But other times the matter is not properly disclosed. Exposure issues become more plain indoors or in dimly lit environments. The Y22s suffer from grain and noise in any form of artificial light.
The phone’s videography is limited to 1080P at 30 fps.
The front offers a generic 8 MP (f/2.0) shooter that gets the job done. It can capture 1080p footage at 30fps.
Processor and performance
Moving on to the processor, the vivo Y22s has a Snapdragon 680 4G chipset based on 6nm architecture. The 680 chip from Snapdragon is the perfect mid-range chipset. That has been a reliable choice for years now. The graphic unit of the processor is equipped with an Adreno 610 GPU. A similar reliability is reflected in the performance as well. Although it is not considered a gaming phone, the Y22s can handle gaming quite well. Especially titles like COD, PUBG. And Asphalt 9 run at the highest settings without. Any hiccups The only problem here is that the device heats up after playing for quite some time.
Battery and charge time
Vivo Y22s is equipped with a 5000 mAh battery. Combine this with the mediocre display. And the device can easily last around 8-10 hours of continuous use. The device also supports 18W wired fast charging which Vivo claims can go from 0 to 70% in 70 minutes.
Official price of vivo Y22s in Bangladesh
The Y22s is available in two variants – a 6/128 GB one and an 8/128 GB configuration. Currently, the 6/128 GB variant is officially available in Bangladesh. The device is priced at Rs 21,999 and can currently be pre-ordered. But, prices are subject to change.
judgment
The vivo Y22s checks a lot of boxes when it comes to affordable mid-range devices. It’s got a durable build with a good camera, a decent battery and stylish looks. But, one aspect that will annoy any user is the display. Apart from that, the vivo Y22s smartphone seems to be an ideal phone for average daily tasks.
